Windows server 2016 datacenter windows is not activated free download. Windows Server 2016

I need to understand how windows activation works. At the moment the first VM I’ve created is asking me to activate it, and it says “we can’t activate Windows on this device as we can’t connect to your organisation’s activation server. My understanding is that when you own datacenter, you can create as many Windows VMs as you like and they will all be licensed. Thanks, the server is hosted at Rackspace – a hosting provider, so there might be a KMS server and the host machine probably is connected to a KMS server I don’t know where that setting is.

We are a Microsoft partner but thats ending at the end of the month and we are not renewing, so I don’t think we want to use the keys that are in there? I did try entering the key that Rackspace used to setup the host – I tried that on the VM, and it was invalid. The key has to match the installed version so if your guest is Standard, you need a Standard key.

If not and your guests are Standard, you have to get the key from Rackspace. Vm’s license is on processor core basis. That means unlimited vms are not possible in data center edition. The guest I installed is datacenter and the host is datacenter also.

I’ve gone ahead and installed HyperV on this server assuming that is the only way to spin up VMs. Is that the correct approach? If your guest is Datacenter as well, you can just change the key to the one used to install the host. If not you need to change the key.

Anyway, that generic key seems to have worked, here’s hoping the problem doesn’t come back :. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.

No I don’t know what that is or where to get it from! Paul wrote: No I don’t know what that is or where to get it from! Thanks I’ll give it a go. I can’t see Rackspace giving me the raw keys that they used to setup the server.

MulieloDan wrote: I wouldn’t keep that key posted on here for very long Nothing secret about that key. It’s a generic key used for AVMA activation. That means unlimited vms are not possible in data center edition Actually per MS licensing Data Center is entitled to unlimited instances of VMs.

Pure Capsaicin. DragonsRule This person is a verified professional. That means unlimited vms are not possible in data center edition That is not correct. The major selling point of Datacenter is that you get unlimited VMs. Also, you don’t license VMs per core. You license Server Standard or Server Datacenter per core. The VM count 2 or unlimited is part of the license. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting. Read these next
